About Us

Then

In 1999, the Alzheimers Society Wairarapa was officially established, during a public meeting hosted by WOOPs (now Age Concern Wairarapa). In 2003 the Alzheimers Wairarapa group was formally established.

The top priority of Alzheimers Wairarapa was to help families coping in the early stages of the illness. The dream was to be able to provide the community with a day activity base for patients. After some intense planning and successful fundraising Iona was born in 2006 - a partnership between Glenwood Masonic and Alzheimers Wairarapa to provide Day Activities.

Now

Since 2005, Alzheimers Wairarapa has faced ongoing challenges in securing government funding to support its work within the community. To date, it is the only one of seventeen Alzheimers Societies across New Zealand that does not receive such funding. The organisation relies on grants, donations, fundraising activities, and the dedication of numerous volunteers.

Alzheimers Wairarapa continues to provide essential support to families through clinics, carer groups, home visits, and the two day activity programmes—namely, Iona and Out and About

The organisation remains committed to delivering these important services throughout the Wairarapa community and plans to expand support to South Wairarapa in response to the increasing needs of an aging population.
